Great DTF transfers begin with a great artwork file. Whether you print a small left-chest logo or a large back graphic, a few checks before uploading can help you avoid fuzzy edges, unexpected backgrounds, and sizing mistakes.
1. Start with a clean design
Use the highest-quality original artwork available. Avoid screenshots, tiny web thumbnails, and files that have been repeatedly saved or enlarged. Zoom in to check lettering, edges, and fine details.
2. Choose the right file format
A PNG with a transparent background is a practical choice for many DTF designs. Transparency lets the garment show around your artwork instead of printing an unwanted rectangular background. If you use a different file type, check the upload requirements before ordering.
3. Set the artwork to the actual print size
Decide the final width and height in inches before exporting. For example, an 8-inch-wide print at 300 pixels per inch needs approximately 2,400 pixels of width. Changing the DPI number alone does not add missing image detail.
4. Aim for crisp resolution
For raster artwork, 300 DPI at the final print dimensions is a useful target. Lower-resolution artwork may work for some bold graphics, but small text and fine lines can become soft or difficult to read. Inspect the artwork at its intended printed size.
5. Check the background and edges
Place your design over both light and dark backgrounds on screen. Look for stray pixels, unwanted white boxes, halos, and semi-transparent edges. Remove anything you do not want transferred to the shirt.
6. Review color and fine details
Screen colors can differ from physical prints. Use clear contrast and avoid extremely thin lines or tiny type. For IdeaMax transfers, follow the current artwork guidance on the product page, including RGB file preparation where applicable.
7. Final pre-upload checklist
- Artwork is sized to the final print dimensions.
- Transparent areas are genuinely transparent.
- Raster graphics have adequate pixel resolution.
- Spelling, logos, and small details are correct.
- There are no unwanted backgrounds or stray pixels.
- You have saved a copy of the original editable artwork.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a JPEG for DTF printing?
JPEG files do not support transparency and may contain compression artifacts. A clean transparent PNG is generally a better starting point when the artwork needs a transparent background.
Does increasing DPI fix a blurry image?
No. Changing the DPI setting without adding genuine image detail cannot repair a low-resolution source.
Should I remove the background?
Yes, if you want only the design itself to transfer. Double-check transparent areas before uploading.
